AN ITALIAN GOLD-MOUNTED PORPHYRY BONBONNIERE SET WITH A MICROMOSAIC AND A MINIATURE, CIRCA 1800
Circular in red porphyry within rose gold mounts chased around the rims with geometrical motifs, the cover set in the centre with a micromosaic depicting the Doves of Pliny, the inside of the base lined in yellow gold and applied in the centre with a miniature on ivory of a lady in a white Empire dress, her black hairs tied up in a bun, in the manner of Jean-Urbain Guérin (1760-1836)

This micromosaic is after a mosaic in Hadrian's Villa dated 2nd BC depicting doves drinking from a tazza and rediscovered in 1737 to become one of the symbol of the Grand Tour.
This mosaic was attributed by Pliny the Elder to the Greek artist Sosus but was nonetheless given the name the 'Doves of Pliny' or the 'Capitoline Doves'.

Cette microsaique est inspirée de la mosaïque ornant le sol de la villa d'Hadrien, datant du deuxième siècle avant J.-C. et représentant des colombes s'abreuvant dans une tazza. Redécouverte en 1737 elle est devenue l’ un des motifs favori du "Grand Tour".
L'auteur Pline l'Ancien a attribué cette mosaïque à l'artiste grec Sosus, lui donnant son nom de "colombes de Pline", ou encore "colombes du Capitole".
Plusieurs micromosaïques du XIXe siècle représentant ce sujet sont illustrées dans Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, Micromosaics Private Collections, 2016, figs. 2, 10, 35, 75, 97 122 et 138.
