A ROCK CRYSTAL CUP, ITALY OR PRAGUE, POSSIBLY 16TH OR 17TH CENTURY

In the 16th and 17th centuries, several Italian cities specialised in cutting rock crystal, in particular Milan and Florence. Prague also enjoyed a reputation in this field, thanks to the Italian artists who settled in the city. Among them, the Miseronis, a family of lapidary craftsmen and jewellers, made their mark in this field and gained European recognition in the mid-16th century. They worked mainly in two workshops: the first in Milan, their home town, and the second in Prague, founded by Ottavio in 1588 following patronage from the Habsburgs.

Our cup shares certain characteristics with other Milanese and Prague productions by the Miseroni family, and more specifically by Dionisio Miseroni (1607-1661), son of the famous Ottavio (1567-1624). This type of relief-carved shell is reminiscent of Dionisio's acanthus leaf work, as in the smoky quartz cup with grape decoration carved around 1648-1649 (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, inv. no. 1345), an oblong cup made around 1650 (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, inv. no. 1367) or a sculpted crystal attributed to him (Sotheby's, New York, 2 February 2024, lot 608), which share with our work the treatment of undulations on the body.

The decorative vocabulary and relief treatment of our rock-crystal cup decorated with four shells are not unlike those of the upper part (cup and lid) of another rock-crystal cup (Sotheby's, Paris, 8 July 2022, lot 407). These two examples closely resemble bowls and cups in the collections of Louis XIV and the Grand Dauphin (1661-1711), now held by the Prado and Louvre museums.
