GERMAN SCHOOL 15th CENTURY, AFTER MARTIN SCHONGAUER, THE ARREST OF JESUS, OIL ON GOLD GROUND PANEL

This panel is based on the engraving The Arrest of Jesus by Martin Schongauer (c. 1445/1450-1491), which forms part of his Passion suite engraved around 1480. Here the German painter and engraver combines two episodes: the betrayal of Judas, who denounces Christ with a kiss, and the attack on Malchus by Saint Peter, who cuts off the ear of the high priest Caiaphas' servant with his sword.

Ce panneau reprend la composition gravée de L’arrestation de Jésus-Christ de Martin Schongauer (vers 1445/1450-1491) appartenant à la suite de la Passion gravée vers 1480. Le peintre et graveur allemand y associe deux épisodes : la trahison de Judas, dénonçant le Christ par un baiser, et l’atteinte à Malchus par saint Pierre qui coupe de son épée l’oreille du serviteur du grand prêtre Caïphe.
