ENGLISH SCHOOL 18th CENTURY, FOLLOWER OF POMPEO BATONI, PORTRAIT OF DANIEL WILSON (1747-1824) OF DALLAM TOWER, WESTMORLAND, WEARING A YELLOW WAISTCOAT AND A GREEN JACKET, HALF-LENGTH, OIL ON CANVAS, INSCRIBED

For the 18th century Grand Tourist, being painted by Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787) during their stay in Rome was almost as much of a must as visiting the Forum and marvelling at the frescoes by Michelangelo (1475-1564) in the Vatican. His style, a synthesis of Bolognese classicism, French rococo and nascent neo-classicism, made him the most sought-after painter in the Eternal City, both for large church commissions and for his delicate portraits. At the end of the 1760s, he painted the double portrait of Joseph II (1741-1790) and Leopold II of Austria (1747-1792), which promoted him to the forefront of portrait painters in Europe.

Daniel Wilson (1746-1848) spent the summer of 1772 in Florence before travelling to Rome in 1773, where he commissioned Batoni to paint his portrait. The original portrait still belongs to the sitter's family. The present painting is probably a copy that Wilson had made in England after his return from Italy, which would have served as a gift for a member of his family.

Pour tous les voyageurs du 'Grand Tour' au XVIIIe siècle, être peint par Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787) pendant leur séjour romain est presque aussi incontournable que de visiter le Forum et de s’émerveiller devant les fresques de Michel-Ange (1475-1564) au Vatican. Son style, une synthèse du classicisme bolonais, du rococo français et du néo-classicisme naissant, fait de lui le peintre le plus couru de la ville éternelle, aussi bien pour les grandes commandes pour des églises que pour ses portraits délicats. À la fin des années 1760, il peint le double portrait de Joseph II (1741-1790) et de Léopold II d'Autriche (1747-1792), ce qui le promeut au premier rang des portraitistes en Europe.

Daniel Wilson (1746-1848) passe l’été de 1772 à Florence avant d'aller à Rome en 1773, où il commande son portrait peint par Batoni. Le portrait original appartient encore à la famille du modèle. Le tableau ci-présent est sans doute une copie que Wilson fit faire en Angleterre après son retour d’Italie, qui aurait servi comme cadeau pour un membre de sa famille.
