FURTHER DETAILS
FLEMISH SCHOOL 16th CENTURY, FOLLOWER OF ROGIER VAN DER WEYDEN, THE DESCENT FROM THE CROSS, OIL ON GOLD GROUND PANEL

This Descent from the Cross, in which the Virgin, Saint John and Saint Joseph of Arimathea surround the body of the crucified Christ, is a composition that was evidently highly sought after, given the numerous versions recorded by Max Jacob Friedländer (1867-1958) (see M. J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, Leiden-Brussels, 1967, II, pp. 79-80, no. 97). In his opinion, the original version of this painting, by van der Weyden (1399 or 1400-1464) or one of his followers is probably that held in Bruges.

Lot Essay
