The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

Le tableau est peint sur panneau de bois parqueté. Le panneau a été aminci et d'anciennes galeries d'insectes xylophages (aujourd'hui inactifs) ont consécutivement été comblées. Le panneau est stabilisé par des baguettes sur les quatre côtés. Le support est stable.

A l'oeil nu, on constate du dessin sous-jacent dans le visage du modèle. Celui-ci a gardé une belle intensité dans son regard. On constate au moins cinq départs de fentes verticales avec une restauration associée. Le fond brun a été repris, tout comme le costume et le couvre-chef noirs du modèle. Son visage a fait l'objet de restaurations ponctuelles.

A l'UV, on constate les restaurations susmentionnées. On constate au moins deux campagnes de restauration, une plus ancienne le long du bord gauche, et une autre, plus récente, correspondant à la reprise du fond à droite de la composition, aux restaurations associées aux départs de fentes et aux retouches dans les carnations (en ce compris dans les mains). Sous un vernis vert avec des traces de vieux vernis au niveau du costume.

La matière reste stable.

Dans un cadre en bois peint de style italien, travail moderne (approx. 45 x 39 cm.).

The painting is executed on panel, this has been thinned and cradled. There is evidence of historic woodworm, this is not active and their tunnels have been filled in in certain places. The panel is supported by wooden batons attached to each edge, The panel is stable.

In natural light some of the under-drawing in the sitter’s face can be seen, this has retained a nice appearance. There are five vertical panel cracks that extend up from the lower panel edge, and three that extend down from the upper edge, these affect the costume and the background of the composition. There is repainting in the background and in the costume. There is scattered retouching in the sitter’s face.

Examination under UV light confirms these observations. We can see at least two historic campaigns of restoration, the older of these along the left hand edge and the more recent to the background to the right-hand side, in the face and to the aforementioned panel cracks. The varnish is relatively thick, with some remains of an older varnish in the costume. The paint remains stable.
