ERNESTINE PANCKOUCKE, A VASE OF ROSES WITH A BUTTERFLY AND A NEST ON A LEDGE, SIGNED AND DATED, OIL ON CANVAS, UNLINED, ON ITS ORIGINAL STRETCHER

The work of Ernestine Panckoucke, née Désormeaux (1784-1860), follows on from that of her master, Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840), who was famous for his paintings of flowers, particularly roses. It is likely that she met Redouté at the Château de Malmaison, when he was working there as a flower painter for the Empress Josephine de Beauharnais (1763-1814).

Few works by Pancoucke are known to us, and they rarely appear on the market. Over the last twenty years, only watercolours by the artist, who was also an illustrator of botanical works, have been offered for sale at auction, meaning that the present painting, signed, dated and on its original canvas, plays an important role in understanding the work of the artist. The motif of the painting is taken from the painting by Jan Frans van Dael (1764-1840) sold at Christie's in Paris on 18 May 2022 (lot 233).

L’œuvre d'Ernestine Panckoucke (1784-1860), née Désormeaux, s’inscrit dans la continuité de celle de son maître, Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840), célèbre pour ses peintures de fleurs, et tout particulièrement ses roses. Il est probable que celle-ci ait rencontré Redouté au château de Malmaison, lorsque celui-ci y travaillait en tant que peintre de fleurs de l’impératrice Joséphine de Beauharnais (1763-1814).

Nous connaissons peu d’œuvres d’Ernestine Pancoucke et celles-ci apparaîssent rarement sur le marché. Sur les vingt dernières années, seules des aquarelles de l’artiste, qui fut également illustratrice d’ouvrages de botanique, ont été proposées en vente aux enchères.

Notre tableau, signé, daté et sur sa toile d'origine, joue ainsi un rôle important dans la compréhension de l’œuvre d’Ernestine Panckoucke. Il est à rapprocher du vase de gauche sur le tableau de Jan Frans van Dael (1764-1840) vendu chez Christie's à Paris le 18 mai 2022 (lot 233).

Le tableau est peint sur sa toile d'origine (toile du fabricant Belot) et est probablement sur son châssis d'origine. Le support est stable.

A l'oeil nu, on constate un réseau de craquelures assez prononcé mais stable pour la plupart. On constate cependant deux petits manques en haut à droite et en bas à gauche, peut-être lié à un soulèvement. Un petit accident est visible dans le coin supérieur gauche qui correspond à une pièce de toile au revers. Sous un vernis jaunâtre. Le tableau bénéficierait d'une campagne de nettoyage. Le tableau a préservé un modelé subtil et de beaux glacis. La signature est très bien préservée.

A l'UV, on constate deux zones de restauration dans le fond, l'une au-dessus du papillon à gauche, l'autre au-dessus de l'une de la rose tombante à droite. On constate aussi une restauration liée à l'accident susmentionné et quelques restaurations ponctuelles sur l'entablement.

Dans un cadre Charles X (approx. 81 x 71 cm.).

The canvas is unlined, on a Belot canvas, and is on its original stretcher. It is held under tension and remains stable.

In natural light the painting very presents well, with the details of the composition beautifully preserved. There is a network of craquelure that remains stable. However, there are two small associated losses in the upper right-hand corner and in the lower left-hand corner. There is a small restored damage in the upper left-hand corner that corresponds with a canvas patch to the reverse. The varnish has yellowed and would benefit from a light clean.

Examination under UV light reveals two small areas of restoration in the background: one above the butterfly to the left and the other over one of the hanging roses to the right. There is also some minor scattered retouching on the ledge.

In a Charles X frame (approx. 81 x 71 cm.).
