Sur piédouche repoussé de fruits et fleurs, le corps tronconique décoré de grenades et larges feuilles d'acanthe encadrant trois médailles bordées d'une chaîne pour deux et d'une corde pour la troisième, le couvercle avec prise en boule sur terrasse feuillagée, l'anse appliquée d'une masque d'homme barbu, poinçons sous le bord et sur le fond: N à l'envers; sous l'anse et sur le piédouche: le chiffre 13 sous couronne; poinçon de contrôle postérieur

Les deux médailles appliquées de chaque côté commémore le mariage de Mary Tudor et de Philippe d'Espagne en 1556 et sont des moulages de celles réalisées par Jacobo Nizolla da Trezzo vers 1555; celle sur la partie frontale est une copie de la médaille par P. Flotner faite à Nuremberg en 1532 et figurant Charles Quint (1500-1558), Empereur du Saint-Empire et son frère Ferdinand (1503-1564).

On spreading foot chased with flowers and fruits, the body chased with pomegranate and large acanthus leaves interspersed with three medals framed by chain and cord border, the scrolling handle cast with a mask of a bearded man, marked under upper rim and underside with inverted N and beneath the lower terminal of the handle with a crowned 13; with later French control mark

Two of the medals applied on the body celebrate the marriage of Mary Tudor and Philip of Spain in 1556 and are moulds of the medals made by Jacobo Nizolla da Trezzo in 1555. The one to the front is molded on a medal by P. Flotner made in Nuremberg in 1532 and depicts Charles V (1500-1558), Holy Roman Emperor and Archduke of Austria from 1519 to 1556 and his brother Ferdinand I (1503-1564), King of Bohemia, Hungary and Croatia from 1526 and Archduke of Austria from 1521 to 1564.
The quality of the metal, the gilding and the chasing combined with the hallmarks suggest that the item is old, made in central Europe between South Germany and Hungary. However the three medals are a later addition and historicist.

Lot Essay

La qualité du métal, du ciselé ainsi que les poinçons frappés sur cette chope suggère que l'objet est de fabrication ancienne et peut-être en Europe centrale, entre le sud de l'Allemagne et la Hongrie. Cependant les trois médailles qui ornent la panse ont été ajoutées postérieurement et sont historicistes.
