ENGLISH The canvas has been subject to relining, it is held under correct tension and remains stable. A stretch of canvas measuring 63.5 cm. in depth has been folded over behind the upper stretcher bar, there is a slight warp to the canvas at the upper edge due to this. The paint surface has retain a lovely texture, with the impastos of the sitter’s costume, the flowers and the capital well preserved. In natural light, some scattered retouching can be seen that has discoloured with age, and there is a restored tear to the canvas in the curtain to the right measuring approx. 25 x 13 cm. The whole is under a yellowed varnish that carries some dirt. Examination under UV light confirms the above, those restorations that are visible to the naked eye are quite recent and seem to have been applied over the varnish. Older restoration can be seen hidden under the old varnish in the red drapery of the curtain. There is some further scattered retouching overall, notably in the sky. There are some traces of mastic restoration to certain zones. The paint remains stable and the painting can be hung as is. Unframed.
