JACOB GERRITSZ. CUYP (1594-1652), PORTRAIT OF A LUTHERAN PASTOR AGED 46, HALF-LENGTH, OIL ON PANEL, INSCRIBED, SIGNED AND DATED

Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp (1594-1652), an important figure in the golden age of Dutch painting, was a sought after portraitist; his works combined realistic precision with a keen sense of social representation. Active in Dordrecht, where he trained his son Albert Cuyp (1620-1691), Jacob belonged to a generation of painters for whom the portrait was a tool allowing the sitter to state their social position in a world where the bourgeois class was in full ascendancy.

His style, influenced by the Caravaggesque tradition of the Utrecht School, is characterised by meticulous attention to the details of faces, fabrics and accessories, and great restraint in composition. He he did overly flatter his models, but imbued them with great dignity and presence, as in the case of the pastor seen in the present work.

Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp (1594-1652), figure importante de l’âge d’or de la peinture hollandaise, s’est distingué par son art du portrait, alliant précision réaliste et sens aigu de la représentation sociale. Actif à Dordrecht, où il forma notamment son fils Albert Cuyp (1620-1691), Jacob appartient à une génération de peintres pour qui le portrait n’est pas seulement un genre mais un outil de reconnaissance, de mémoire et d’affirmation dans une société en plein essor bourgeois.

Son style, nourri de la tradition caravagesque par le biais de l'école d'Utrecht, se caractérise par une attention minutieuse aux détails des visages, des étoffes, des accessoires, et une grande sobriété dans la composition. Il ne cherche ni l’idéalisation ni la flatterie : ses modèles, à l’instar du pasteur ci-présent, sont représentés avec une présence grave mais toujours empreinte de dignité.

Le tableau a préservé un joli rendu du drapé et des détails de l'aube du pasteur. Les carnations des mains présentent également un beau rendu.

Le tableau est exécuté sur un panneau non parqueté composé de trois planches verticales, renforcé le long des deux jointures de planches. L'ensemble est stable.

A l'oeil nu, on constate les deux jointures de planches susmentionnées. On constate des retouches ponctuelles dans le visage et l'aube du pasteur.

L'examen à l'UV confirme les observations susmentionnées et révèle d'importantes restaurations dans les fonds où l'on distingue au moins deux campagnes de restauration, ainsi que dans la partie droite du visage et dans les yeux du modèle. Une zone de retouche plus importante est également visible sous la main gauche du modèle. Le tableau est sous un vernis non homogène.

Dans un cadre en bois peint et doré (approx. 110 x 90 x 4,5 cm).

The painting has preserved a lovely rendering of the drapery and details of the shepherd's dawn. The complexions of the hands are also well rendered.

The painting is executed on a uncradled panel made up of three vertical boards, reinforced along the two board joints. The whole is stable.

In natural light, the two board joints mentioned above can be seen. The pastor's face and alb have been retouched in places.

UV examination confirms the above observations and reveals significant restoration in the backgrounds, where at least two restoration campaigns can be distinguished, as well as in the right-hand part of the face and in the model's eyes. A larger area of retouching is also visible under the model's left hand. The painting is under an uneven varnish.

In a painted and gilded wooden frame (approx. 110 x 90 x 4.5 cm).
