FURTHER DETAILS
JEAN SIMON BERTHÉLEMY (1743-1811), RECLINING BACCHANT PLAYING THE CYMBALS, OIL ON CANVAS, SIGNED AND DATED

Several versions of this composition of a recumbent bacchante playing the cymbals are known, all dated to different periods and varying in size (see N. Volle, 1979, op. cit. nos. 47, 48 and 69). One of these versions, smaller than the present version, was in a private collection in New York and dated 1778 (see Sotheby's, New York, 5 June 2002, lot 82). Another version, even smaller and dated to 1783 was offered for sale at Christie's, London, 3 July 2013, lot 255. Volle states in her monograph on the artist that one of his compositions, together with its pendant representing Jupiter and Antiope, was in the collection of Louis-Gabriel Véri-Raionard (1722-1785), Marquis de Véri. The composition belonging to the Marquis de Véri is described in his posthumous sale on 12 December 1785 in Paris as having the dimensions closest to our composition, and we can therefore imagine that the present painting, dated 1776, could correspond to that of the Marquis (see N. Volle, Paris, 1979, op. cit., no. 48). The pendant may also have reappeared on the Paris art market in 1991 (see Hôtel Georges V, Paris, 9 April 1991, lot 41).

As Volle points out, the influence of Boucher (1703-1770) is tangible in this sensual composition with its vivid reds and blues. The smooth, pure skin, however, also speaks to the nascent Neoclassicism of the second half of the 18th century.
