JOHN WHITE ALEXANDER (1856-1915), PORTRAIT OF CHARLOTTE 'LOLLOTTE' AMAN-JEAN NÉE SIMON (1897-1994), SEATED IN PROFILE, OIL ON CANVAS, UNLINED, REDUCED ALONG THE LOWER EDGE

According to family tradition, the American John White Alexander (1856-1915) saw the three year old Charlotte Simon (1897-1994), daughter of his friend, the painter Lucien Joseph Simon (1861-1945) and, delighted by her exuberance and grace, Alexander asked to be allowed to paint her. The present portrait is the result of this encounter.

Painted with the easy grace that characterizes Alexander’s oeuvre, the portrait contains echoes of those of Diego Velazquez (1599-1660) and Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) in the freedom of the brushstrokes and the inspired use of white to bring movement into the silky folds of her dress. The final piece was evidently very well received by ‘Lollotte’’s father, who expressed his delight in it in a letter to Alexander dated 18^thJune 1900 (Alexander Autograph Collection, Princeton University Library, see literature supra).

Alexander and Simon’s friendship pre-dated the execution of the present work. Both were active players in the lively Parisian art world of the final decade of the 19^thcentury and the beginning of the 20^thcentury. Alexander first exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1893 and was immediately elected to the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts. Both he and Simon went on the win a gold medal at the Paris Exposition of 1900, an honour which led to Simon being named a chevalier of the Legion of Honneur the same year. Today, both painters works can be found hanging together in museums, such as the musée D’Orsay (Paris) and the Philadelphia Museum of Art (Pennsylvania).

That Charlotte appears so at ease in her portrait is unsurprising. Even at this young age, she would have been used to the activity of the painter, as all members of the Simon family were employed as models both by Lucien and by his wife Jeanne Simon, née Dauchez (1869-1949), also a celebrated artist. Her brother Paul (1892-1979), also went on to become and artist and sculptor, whose work mostly depicted exotic animals.

Selon la tradition familiale, l'Américain John White Alexander (1856-1915) vit Charlotte Simon (1897-1994), fille du peintre Lucien Joseph Simon (1861-1945), âgée de trois ans, et, enchanté par son exubérance et sa grâce, Alexander demanda à pouvoir la peindre. Le présent portrait est le résultat de cette rencontre.

Peint avec la grâce facile qui caractérise l'œuvre d'Alexander, le portrait contient des échos de ceux de Diego Velasquez (1599-1660) et d'Antoine van Dyck (1599-1641) dans la liberté des coups de pinceau et l'utilisation inspirée du blanc pour donner du mouvement aux plis soyeux de sa robe. La pièce finale a manifestement été très bien accueillie par le père de 'Lollotte', qui a exprimé sa joie dans une lettre à Alexander datée du 18 juin 1900 (Alexander Autograph Collection, Princeton University Library, voir bibliographie supra).

L'amitié entre Alexander et Simon est antérieure à l'exécution de cette œuvre. Tous deux ont joué un rôle actif dans le monde artistique parisien de la dernière décennie du XIXe siècle et du début du XXe siècle. Le fait que Charlotte semble si à l'aise dans son portrait n'est pas surprenant. En effet, tous les membres de la famille Simon étaient employés comme modèles par Lucien et par son épouse, Jeanne Simon née Dauchez (1869-1949), également artiste célèbre. Son frère Paul (1892-1979) est aussi devenu un artiste et un sculpteur, dont l'œuvre représente principalement des animaux exotiques.
