FURTHER DETAILS
MARIANNE LOIR, PORTRAIT OF A SEATED WOMAN, OIL ON CANVAS, IN A CARVED GILTWOOD FRAME WITH THE STAMP 'I. BELLE'

The fur-trimmed red coat-dress worn by the sitter in this portrait seems to have been very popular with portrait painters in the mid-eighteenth century: Jean-Marc Nattier (1685-1766) had two of his models wear it, not least the Countess Tessin (Musée du Louvre, Paris, inv. no. 925), and Queen Marie Leszczynska (Château de Versailles, Île-de-France, inv. no. MV 2096). It is a dress à la française in ruby-red silk velvet bordered with fur. It opens onto an underdress with a cascade of white taffeta ribbons and a lace border at the model's décolleté. The model also wears a peaked bonnet.

This painting can be compared with the Presumed portrait of Madame Geoffrin attributed to Marianne Loir (1745-1783) kept at the National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington DC).

We would like to thank Jean-Jacques Petit of the Conservatoire du Portrait du Dix-Huitième Siècle for confirming the attribution to Marianne Loir on the basis of a photographic examination of the work and Séverine Experton-Dard, Heritage Textile & Fashion Expert, for her help in writing this note.
