FURTHER DETAILS
A GERMAN PARCEL-GILT SILVER AND CORAL NEF, MARK OF HEINRICH WINTERSTEIN, AUGSBURG, 1599-1604
On turtle-shaped base, the stem formed of scrolls alternating with coral branches, the body chased with cartouches featuring in two sea monsters interspaced with branches of fruits, three figures on the bridge, two with a rifle, the third with a rudder, one climbing the ropes behind the billowing sail and one in the crown nest, marked on base: town and maker

The "Schiffspokale" or boat-shaped cup was either displayed as an ornamental nef following the French court tradition where it would be placed in front of the most important guest; or it could be used as a drinking cup fitted with four wheels to allow the boat to be passed around the table. These highly decorative objects, including particular details such as the crow's nest, the ropes and crew, were a speciality of Esaias zur Linden in Nuremberg and Heinrich Winterstein in Augsburg. M. Rosenberg list no less than seven for Winterstein, in Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen, vol. 1, Frankfurt Am Main, 1922, p. 61, No 419.
For a very comparable example, by the same maker and dated 1620-1630, see La magie de l'orfèvrerie, vol. II, Anvers, 2004, p. 134, ill. 123.
