NIKOLAUS MANUEL, CALLED NIKLAUS MANUEL DEUTSCH (CIRCA 1484-1530), FOUR ANGELS AROUND A THRONE, OIL ON PANEL, A FRAGMENT

This fragment of an altarpiece is a new addition to the rich body of work by the Swiss painter Nikolaus Manuel (c.1484-1530). A painter with an unusual life, Niklaus Manuel was also a Swiss mercenary, taking part in the wars of the League of Cambrai in 1516. In 1517, he undertook an ambitious composition for the walls surrounding the cemetery of the Dominican monastery in Bern (now the French church). The work, which was extremely famous in its day, depicted a danse macabre, sadly it was destroyed the following century. Known today through a copy by Albrecht Kauw (1616-1681) from 1649, the motifs and faces in would have been very similar to those in the present painting.

Our fragment appears to be the left-hand part of a panel, which would have had at the centre a throne with a seat holy figure (likely the Virgin or God the Father). The angel musicians are crowned with halos very similar to those on the panel dedicated to the Shepherds in the altarpiece of the Adoration of the Magi, painted around 1517 (Einsiedeln monastery, Bern).

We would like to thank Dr. Guido Messling for suggesting the attribution of this painting to Nikolaus Manuel and for providing us with the information contained in the lot essay.
