A TERRACOTTA GROUP OF THREE BUSTS INLCUDING THE BUST OF HOMER, SIGNED AND DATED PROBABLY BY PIERRE-PHILIBERT DEGAND (1747-1825)

These three busts, monogrammed and dated "P.D 1819", could be the work of the sculptor Pierre Guislain Philibert Degand (1746-1825). Born in Arras, he practised mainly in his native region, working mainly in Douai where he was appointed professor of modelling at the Écoles académiques in 1778. The Douai museum has several terracottas by Degand (Jean-François Bérenger d'Onicourt, Les Trois Grâces, Edme Liégeard, Claude-Louis-Samson Michel, Pierre Taffin).
The type of old man was inspired by busts of Homer after the antique, one of the models of which is in the Musée du Louvre (inv. MR 530).
