FURTHER DETAILS
WOLFGANG ADAM TOEPFFER, YOUNG WOMAN SITTING BY A RIVER, MONOGRAMMED, OIL ON BOARD

Initially trained as an engraver in Geneva and then in Paris, Wolfgang Adam Toepffer (1766-1847) turned to watercolour and oil painting on his return to Geneva in 1789, in the midst of the revolution. He began by painting portraits, sometimes rather caricatural, then landscapes of the Swiss countryside in the company of Pierre-Louis De la Rive (1753-1817). His sought-after compositions painted from life, were influenced by his French counterpart Nicolas Taunay (1755-1830); these found many willing buyers across Europe, including Marie Fedorovna (1847-1928), Empress Consort of Russia, and Joséphine de Beauharnais (1763-1814), Empress of the French.

This painting is listed as not located in the artist's catalogue raisonné (L. Boissonnas, 2011, op. cit. supra), which dates it to around 1840.
