The painting is executed on a hardwood panel, this is cradled to the reverse. It is possible that the panel was marginally thinned when the cradle was put on. The cradle is held in place with glue, which can be seen in certain places. The whole remains stable.
The painting presents very well in natural light, with all of the details of the figures and the landscape very nicely preserved. The fluidity of execution remains fully appreciable, notably in the figures’ costumes. In a raking light a fine pattern of craquelure can be seen across the paint surface. The paint remains stable.
Examination under UV light reveals some retouching along what appears to be either a panel joint or a crack in the panel that runs through the composition just above the central house. There is some minor scattered retouching to the sky, and some minor retouching along the panel edges, likely the result of historic frame abrasion. The figures all appear to be in a very good state of preservation when examined under UV light. However, there is a fine varnish, which slightly fluoresces, that may hide some further retouching in the backgrounds.
