CHARLES GUILLAUME HORNIG (BORN 1824), VIEW OF A CEMETERY WITH CONSTANTINOPLE IN THE BACKGROUND, OIL ON CANVAS, SIGNED AND DATED

Born in Strasbourg in 1824, Hornig mainly painted views of Constantinople, which he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes at the Palais des Champs-Elysées from 1865 onwards. A large view of the Hagia Sofia exhibited at the Salon in 1870 may well be the large painting that went on sale in London in 1997 (Christie's, London, 21 March 1997, lot 84). Dated 1877, the present painting continues these themes dear to the artist. In the background the city of Constantinople and its two main mosques, the Blue Mosque and Saint Sophia can be seen. Seen from the hills of a Muslim cemetery, it is possible that the foreground shows the Eyüp cemetery on the European side of Istanbul. One of the city's largest and most historic cemeteries, it contains the tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (576-c.672 or 674), a companion (sahaba) of the Prophet Mohammed (c.570-c. 632).

Né à Strasbourg en 1824, le peintre Hornig peindra principalement des vues de Constantinople qu’il exposa au Salon des artistes, au palais des Champs-Elysées, dès l’année 1865. Une grande vue de la mosquée Hagia Sofia présentée au Salon de 1870 pourraît ainsi être la large peinture passée en vente à Londres en 1997 (vente Christie’s, Londres, 21 mars 1997, lot 84).
Datée de 1877, notre peinture prolonge ces thèmes chers à l’artiste. On retrouve à l’arrière-plan de cette composition la ville de Constantinople et ses deux mosquées principales, la mosquée bleue et Sainte-Sophie. Prise depuis les hauteurs d’un cimetière musulman, il pourrait s’agir d’une vue depuis le cimetière d’Eyüp situé sur la rive européenne d’Istanbul. Cimetière historique et parmi les plus vastes de la ville, le cimetière abrite notamment la tombe d’Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (576-vers 672 ou 674), compagnon (sahaba) du prophète Mahomet (vers 570-vers 632).

Le tableau a fait l’objet d’un rentoilage correctement réalisé. La toile est sur un châssis à clés. L’ensemble est stable.

À la lumière naturelle, le tableau se présente dans un bon état général. On constate qu’il a préservé de jolis empâtements dans le paysage et un agréable rendu de la lumière.
On constate un manque en bas à gauche au niveau de la signature ainsi qu’un autre petit manque dans la partie inférieure droite du tableau, sous les vaches. On constate une légère campagne de stabilisation au niveau de petits manques dans la partie inférieure au centre du tableau, sous la dame voilée assise.
Le tableau est sous un vernis encrassé qui pourrait bénéficier d’une campagne de nettoyage.

L’examen à la lumière ultraviolette révèle une zone de restauration dans le tronc de l’arbre au-dessus du groupe de personnages, ainsi que quelques légères restauration ponctuelles au niveau des pierres tombales dans le coin inférieur droit de la composition.

Dans un cadre en bois doré (approx. 134 x 210,5 x 9 cm).

The canvas has been subject to relining, it is held under correct tension on a keyed stretcher and remains stable.

In natural light, the painting appears in good condition overall. Nice impasto in the landscape and a pleasant rendering of light have been preserved.

There is a minor loss in the lower left-hand corner, by the signature, and another minor loss in the lower right-hand corner, below the cows. There appears to have been a previous stabilization campaign in the lower center of the painting, under the seated veiled lady. The painting is under a dirty varnish that might benefit from a light clean.

Examination under ultraviolet light reveals an area of restoration in the trunk of the tree above the group of figures, as well as some minor spot restoration to the tombstones in the lower right-hand corner of the composition.

In a giltwood frame (approx. 134 x 210.5 x 9 cm).
