A GERMAN PARCEL-GILT SILVER STAG CUP
ATTRIBUTED TO GEORG HELLTHALER, AUGSBURG, CIRCA 1580
The stag chased with simulated pelt and textured mane, wearing a collar with strapwork and lozenge-shaped simulated gems, with chain and oval cartouche engraved with the arms of the Arch-Duke of Austria with crown above, within rope twist frame and pendant drop beneath, with detachable head, on later oblong wood base, with ownership initials VM in monogram on the neck, apparently unmarked

The stag bears on its neck the owner's mark "VM," referring to Ferdinand von Miller (1813–1887), a Bavarian sculptor and founder from Aichach in Upper Bavaria. After training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and later in Paris, he returned to Munich, where he joined the royal foundry, eventually becoming its director and then its owner in 1873. He is best known for his bronze colossus Bavaria, which stands on the Theresienwiese in Munich.
