Ce bronze reprend la composition initiée par Galeazzo Mondella dit Moderno (1467-vers 1528) auquel on attribue une plaquette représentant Hercule dans une position similaire, étouffant le lion de Némée en pressant sa gueule contre son torse. Citons trois exemplaires de ce bronze : l'un en bronze doré anciennement conservé à la fondation Bemberg de Toulouse, l'un au Cleveland Museum of Art (inv. 1975.111) et un autre vendu à Deauville, Tradart, 10 octobre 2021, lot 97.
