FURTHER DETAILS
A BRONZE GROUP OF HERCULES AND THE NEMEAN LION, AFTER MODERNO, ITALIAN, 16TH CENTURY

This bronze is cast after a model by Galeazzo Mondella called Moderno (1467-c. 1528), to whom a plaquette is attributed representing Hercules in a similar position, suffocating the Nemean lion by pressing its mouth against his chest. There are three known examples of this bronze: one in gilt-bronze previously in the Fondation Bemberg in Toulouse, one in the Cleveland Museum of Art (inv. 1975.111) and another sold at Deauville, Tradart, 10 October 2021, lot 97.
