SPANISH SCHOOL 17th CENTURY, THE EGYPTIAN SIBYL, OIL ON CANVAS, INSCRIBED

This composition relates to the Egyptian Sibyl engraved in a medallion by Thomas de Leu (c.1555-c. 1612) after Crispijn de Passe the Elder (c.1601-1612), below which appears in a cartouche the same inscription (Verbum nascetur Caro factum Virgine matre, Optatum multis at Solymis odio. Christus erit, constans vitiorum Censor, at isdem, Si quos poenitat, melle repletus erit) as can be seen on the present painting. The latter also includes iconographic elements similar to those found in the engraved version, such as the hat, the staff of power and a codex (this last element being a common iconographic motif in the representation of sibyls).
