Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
71,5 x 78,5 x 7 cm).
English
The painting presents well in natural light, the flesh tones have ben well preserved, and the paint has kept a good depth of colour across the composition.
The canvas has been subject to relining, it is held under correct tension on a keyed stretcher. The whole is stable.
In natural light, we can see some minor losses to the tree trunk to the left of the composition. There is a network of craquelure, with some associated infill and retouching, which has dicoloured with age (e.g.: in Daphne's white drapery, her hip, her hair; Cupid's bust and drapery; and in Apollo's right arm and legs; etc.).
The browns of the background have been thinned as a result of the lining process.
The painting is under a thick varnish that makes it impossible to distinguish previous restoration campaigns under UV examination.
In a carved gilded frame (approx. 71.5 x 78.5 x 7 cm).
