FLEMISH SCHOOL 17th CENTURY, FOLLOWER OF JAN BRUEGHEL THE ELDER, THE TEMPTATION OF SAINT ANTHONY, OIL ON COPPER

The Temptation of Saint Anthony, which recounts the spiritual trials and demonic visions suffered by Saint Anthony the Great, the founder of monasticism, is a popular hagiographic theme in art history. Monstrous creatures, seductive women, illusory riches... The infernal and demonic visions that assailed Saint Anthony allowed artists to explore the depths of human anguish and give free rein to their imagination.

Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625), like his father Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c.1525/1530-1569) before him (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, inv. WA1863.162), tackled the subject on several occasions in fantastic scenes in which grotesque creatures invade a desolate landscape. The present composition combines Breugelian inventions from different works by the Antwerp painter: the landscape dominated by the Temple of Vesta comes from the painting in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden (inv. 878), while the figures in the lower left-hand corner are from a drawing by the master in the Kupferstichkabinett of the Hamburger Kunsthalle (Hamburg, inv. 21762).

Le Tentation de saint Antoine, contant les épreuves spirituelles et visions démoniaques subies par saint Antoine le Grand, le fondateur du monachisme, est un thème hagiographique prisé de l’histoire de l’art. Créatures monstrueuses, femmes séduisantes, richesses illusoires, … Les visions infernales et démoniaques par lesquelles saint Antoine fut assailli permettent aux artistes d’explorer les profondeurs de l’angoisse humaine et de donner ainsi libre cours à leur imagination.

Jan Brueghel l’Ancien (1568-1625), à l’instar de son père Pieter Bruegel l’Ancien (vers 1525/1530-1569) avant lui (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, inv. WA1863.162), aborde le sujet à différentes reprises dans des scènes fantastiques où des créatures grotesques envahissent un paysage en désolation. La composition ci-présente mêle justement des inventions breughéliennes provenant de différentes œuvres du peintre anversois : le paysage dominé par le temple de Vesta provient du tableau de la Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister de Dresde (inv. 878) tandis nous retrouvons les figures en bas à gauche dans un dessin du maître conservé dans le Kupferstichkabinett de la Hamburger Kunsthalle (Hambourg, inv. 21762).

La peinture est peinte sur une plaque de cuivre, qui a été enduite avec une couche de préparation au verso. Le cuivre est stable et ne présente aucune déformation. À la lumière naturelle, il y a des traces d'au moins deux campagnes de restauration, notamment dans le ciel en haut à droite, où les retouches se sont décolorées avec l'âge. Le tableau est recouvert d'un vernis épais qui a jauni et qui comporte quelques salissures. Le vernis pourrait bénéficier d'un léger nettoyage. L'examen sous lumière UV révèle des retouches plus récentes dans le ciel et la partie supérieure de la composition, ainsi que des retouches plus anciennes dans la cascade. Il y a d'autres retouches éparses dans l'ensemble de l'œuvre. Le vernis a été partiellement nettoyé sur le côté gauche, autour des personnages. Le vernis restant empêche un examen plus approfondi de l'œuvre.
Dans un cadre en bois doré, travail moderne (approx. 50 x 68,5 x 6 cm).

The painting is executed on a copper plate, which has been painted with a preparation coat to the reverse. The copper is stable and does not show any warping.
In natural light, there is evidence of at least two campaigns of restoration, notably to the sky at upper right, where the retouching has discoloured with age. The painting is under a thick varnish that has yellowed and carries some dirt. This would benefit from cleaning.
Examination under UV light reveals more recent retouching in the sky and the upper part of the composition, as well as some older retouching in the waterfall. There is some further scattered retouching throughout.
The varnish has been partially cleaned on the left-hand side, around the figures. The remaining varnish precludes a more in depth examination of the work.
In a modern gilt frame (approx. 50 x 68,5 x 6 cm)
