Le tableau est exécuté sur une toile. Celle-ci a fait l'objet d'un rentoilage. Elle est maintenue sous une tension correcte sur un châssis à clés et reste stable.

Le tableau présente très bien à la lumière naturelle, tous les détails du visage et du costume étant bien préservés. On constate un fin réseau de craquelures qui est visible sous une lumière rasante. La matière reste stable. La main droite du modèle semble avoir été retouchée.

L'examen sous lumière UV confirme les observations ci-dessus. Il révèle un renforcement et des retouches dans les passages les plus sombres du chapeau du modèle et un renforcement à gauche du modèle dans la partie sombre de son costume.

The painting is executed on canvas, this has been subject to relining, it is held under correct tension on a key stretcher and remains stable.

The painting presents very well in natural light, with all the details of the face and the costume nicely preserved. There is a fine pattern of craquelure that is evident in a raking light. The paint remains stable. There appears to be some retouching in the model's proper right hand.

Examination under UV light confirms the above observations. It shows further strengthening and retouching to the darkest passages of the sitter's hat and some strengthening to the left of the sitter in the dark of his costume.
