FURTHER DETAILS
GIOVANNI COLI (1636-1681) AND FILIPPO GHERARDI (1643-1704), ESTHER IN FRONT OF AHASUERUS, OIL ON CANVAS

Both natives of Lucca, the painters Giovanni Coli (1636-1681) and Filippo Gherardi (1643-1704) actively collaborated throughout their careers. Trained by Pietro Paolini (1603-1681) in their home town before moving to Rome to work in the studio of Pietro da Cortona (1596-1669), it was ultimately their years spent in the Serenissima that left a lasting mark on their personal and collaborative works. Returning to Rome to paint the frescoes dedicated to the Battle of Lepanto in the Palazzo Colonna, and then to Lucca to paint the frescoes in the cathedral, the artists employed a light, almost chalky pictorial technique and bright, bold colours typical of the Venetian masters, thus establishing their work in the tradition of Veronese (1528-1588). The present composition depicting Esther before Ahasuerus, of which another version with variants is known (see D. Ton, 2007, op. cit., p. 66, no. 15), attests to this Venetian taste in seventeenth-century Baroque painting. In his article on the two painters, Denis Ton places this work at the end of the Venetian sojourn or in the early 1670s (D. Ton, 2007, op. cit., p. 69).
