A MARBLE RELIEF REPRESENTING THE ALLEGORY OF VANITY, PROBABLY FLEMISH, 17TH OR EARLY 18TH CENTURY

In the visual arts, soap bubbles symbolize the fragility and transience of human life. Here, blown by a putto accompanied by a skull, there is no doubt as to an allegorical reading: it is a metaphor for vanity. The present composition closely resembles the famous engraving by Hendrick Goltzius entitled Quis evadet?, ‘Who will escape’ (New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, inv. 51.501.4929).

Lot Essay

» (New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, inv. 51.501.4929).
