A GERMAN SILVER-GILT TANKARD
POSSIBLY MARK OF JOHANN FLACH, ANNABERG-BUCHHOLZ (SAXONY), 1631-1633
On spreading foot engraved with flutes and shells, the faceted octagonal body finely engraved with allegorical figures emblematic of the Eight Virtues and Latin inscriptions within foliate frames, the lobes chased with symmetrical scrolls centred by fruits or drapery swags, the cover similarly chased and with baluster finial, the scroll handle cast with demi female figure and with winged cherub thumbpiece, the interior of the cover with a circular boss engraved with a band of scrolls and strapwork, the base later engraved with the initials 'A.M.S:. / .:K:I:D:. / 1782 / Vg. 7 7 lod' and later inventory number 24, marked underneath; with later Dutch and French control marks

The Seven Virtues and Patience engraved on this tankard are based on engravings by Crispijn van de Passe the Elder (1590–1612), active in the Netherlands, some kept in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (Acc. No. 22775 / 26171:1 / 26171:2).
In Christian tradition, there are Seven Virtues, but the addition of Patience, described as a complementary virtue or as an extension of Temperance or Strength, allowed for an expanded moral or spiritual framework, fitting for a tankard.
This model of tankard can be found throughout southern Germany and as far as Poland, demonstrating not only its popularity but also the significance of Christian iconography in the decoration.

Les Sept Vertus et la Patience gravées sur ce tankard sont d'après des gravures de Crispin van de Passe l'Ancien (1590-1612) actif en Hollande, dont certains exemplaires sont conservés au Victoria and Albert Museum, Londres (Acc. No. 22775 / 26171:1/ 26171:2).
