Lot Essay

‘A Small Sized Spring’ started as an homage to the Old Masters and was completed in the studio while locked down in Hertfordshire. In his 30 minutes daily nature walks, as he was sketching the blooms, Leon tried to bring the outdoors inside. The woods envelop the flowers in the painting.

Artist Radu Leon (b.1971) has led the course on Canaletto’s drawing techniques during the exhibition ‘Canaletto & Art of Venice’ at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace in 2017, and completed a doctorate in History of Art in Venice in 2018. Leon shares his skill, connoisseurship and passion for lesser-known media (such as silverpoint, hand-made pastels following old recipes, or size tempera) with students at The Prince’s Foundation - School of Traditional Arts in London, and around the world.
