Lot Essay

“For the last seven years, I've been photographing the Vanity Fair party at the Oscars. My good friend, the production designer Thomas Thurnauer creates these sets which are super elaborate and we invite guests to come in and be photographed. It’s a pretty intense process, because you only get a very short time with the celebrity and you never know if it is going to work. If it does, you get these wonderful in-between moments, before they head out back to drink Martinis with their favorite movie stars. Oprah was one of my highlights. She looks super elegant and beautifully posed, but also a little off guard. It was just one of those wonderful spontaneous moments, and atypical of the way she is usually seen.”
