Lot Essay

“We often create storylines for our subjects, particularly if they are actors, they like having a place to go, and this picture of Leo is a great example. We’d found this nasty old hotel in Downtown LA, each room was dirtier than the next and you had to walk over dead pigeons and dust. I worked with the designer Arianne Phillips, who kept the look cool and modern. Leo was really accommodating and it was such an enjoyable session. After we photographed in the hotel, we ran around downtown and found this great place called the Hotel Leo down a back alley. I’ve got a great shot of Leo hanging off the fire escape.”
