Lot Essay

“I’ve been working with the Stones since the mid-1990s, and I’ve probably photographed Keith Richards the most. He’s a real gentleman, very intelligent and wise. He’s the coolest subject you’ll ever have, funny, sharp and engaged. The challenge of course, is to do something original, because he’s nearly always portrayed with a cigarette. He said recently that photographers were trying to kill him because we are always asking him to smoke.

Unlike actors, musicians don’t need characters to play, they are who they are, so I often look for inspiration in their lyrics or their own visual references. We shot this in my studio in the West Village, and Keith was very laid back. There’s so much life in his face, it’s very animated. He’s a little bit of a prankster and that rascal inside him really comes out in photographs.”
