Lot Essay

This scarab is engraved with a hybrid monster composed of a horse, cock and fish. The forepart is of a winged horse with a protruding tongue. Its equine forelegs are extended and the body is joined to a looped fish tail forked at its tip with cock’s legs below. A dolphin leaps above, and the scene is enclosed within a hatched border. For other hybrid monsters see nos. 583 and 585 in Boardman, Archaic Greek Gems.
