Lot Essay

This ring is cast with an oval bezel, beveled on the underside, and a plain hoop, slightly rounded on the interior and exterior. It is engraved with the winged goddess Nike, dressed in a chiton and himation, bending forward to adjust the sandal on her raised foot.

The subject is best known from the relief on the parapet of the Temple of Athena Nike on the Athenian acropolis (pl. 420 in A. Stewart, ). For the same subject on a Western Greek silver ring in the Victoria and Albert Museum, see pl. 760 in Boardman, Sangiorgi suggested the present ring was from Taranto, and Boardman and Wagner also considered this possibly of Western Greek workmanship.
