Lot Essay

The solid gold ring is cast with a thin oval bezel, overhanging slightly beyond the beveled underside. The plain hoop is carinated at its outer edge. The bezel is engraved with a nude athlete standing on a short groundline. His legs and head are in profile, his torso shown in three-quarter frontal view. In his lowered left hand he holds a strigil. For the subject compare the carnelian scaraboid from Brindisi, no. Aba6 in H.C.L. Wiegandt, Die griechischen Siegel klassischer Zeit.
