Lot Essay

Engraved on this flat oval ringstone is the winged horse Pegasus standing beside a column. Before him is a sword and a rock. According to mythology, when Perseus cut off the head of Medusa, out of her body leaped Chrysaor and Pegasus. Perhaps the sword may be for Chrysaor, whose name meant "the gold sword" (aor chryseion).
