Lot Essay

This ringstone is cast with a maenad dancing on tiptoe, probably a maenad, wearing a short chiton. Her arms are bent at the elbows, with her hands at her breasts. The scene is enclosed within a hatched border. For another of black and white banded glass perhaps cast from the same stone, see no. 74 in M. Henig, The Lewis Collection of Gemstones.
