In 1985, Pierre Cardin collaborated with Chilean-born sculptor Carlos Peñafiel to produce a surrealist leather shoe inspired by René Magritte's 1930s series Le modèle rouge. The brown pebbled leather was molded into sets of toes, producing a bizarre trompe l'oeil effect. These shoes are very rare and exist for men. They have inspired artists such as Pierre Le-Tan who illustrated them and French sculptor César Baldaccini who has been photographed holding Peñafiel's creation. Another single male shoe is in the Centre National du Costume de Scène in Moulins, from the Rudolf Nureyev collection.
