The present artwork was created for Sony’s Metreon shopping center in San Francisco. Unlike many other large firms in the entertainment industry, like Disney or Universal, Sony did not hold the IP for a large cast of characters that they could employ for marketing campaigns and other projects. Sony's collaboration with Sendak began in the 90s and included their flagship development in San Francisco. A four-storey complex built and owned by Sony, the Metreon featured a children’s play area designed after Where the Wild Things Are and a theme restaurant based on In the Night Kitchen. The Metreon opened on 16 June 1999.
The present item has two overlaid sheets of tracing paper, showing Wild Thing Bernard superimposed onto the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan skyline. This was possibly for a three-dimensional display similar to those that Sendak created for Sony's AT&T Building display in New York. Sendak's note to himself in the margin reads: “LOTS more cars – people – boats??”
