Lot Essay

A box in the Kunstindustrimuseum, Copenhagen (inv. B 16/1939), with the same moulding is illustrated by Barbara Beaucamp-Markowsky, Boîtes en Porcelaine des manufactures européennes au 18e siècle, Fribourg, 1985, p. 196, no. 151, where she notes that the portrait on the cover is Augustus.

Kändler’s work report for July 1742 ‘repaired in the paste a snuff-box for Count Wackerbath on which there was an ancient Roman head’, which may relate to the form of this box.
