A small number of Meissen snuff-boxes are marked with a triangle to the interior of the cover; this 'cryptic' mark has been attributed to the painter Philipp Ernst Schindler Senior (1694-1765) who was engaged by Höroldt to work at the Meissen manufactory as a journeyman painter on 4 October 1724.1 Although lacking the triangle mark, the presence of the mysterious 'S' and the fine stipple-painted figural scene on the interior of the box, very similar in style to those attributed to Schindler, may suggest that a similar attribution is possible in this instance. For a snuff-box painted with Chinoiserie figures to the exterior and with lovers to the interior, which is attributed to Schindler, see Ulrich Pietsch in Barbara Beaucamp-Markowsky et al., Meissen Snuff-Boxes of the Eighteenth Century, Röbbig, Munich, 2013, p. 136, cat. no. 11.

1. Snuff-boxes bearing the triangle mark that are attributed to Schindler are often, but not always, decorated with Chinoiserie scenes to the exterior. See the Chinoiserie saucer initialled 'PES' and attributed to Schindler in the collection of the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, Schloss Lustheim (inv. no. ES 102).
