This model is recorded in Kändler’s Feierabendarbeit dating from 1 April to the end of July 1738 as being made with the help of an apprentice (‘nebst einem Gesellen’), possibly P. Reinicke. It is described as: ‘Ein sauber angekleideter Schäfer mit deβen Compagnionin, welche er bey der Hand führet und selbige küsset, sie stehen unter einem grünen Baum mit 2. Ausgearbeiteten Schäfgen und einem Hund’.

For the example in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, see Yvonne Hackenbrock, Meissen and Other Continental Porcelain, Faience and Eneamel in the Irwin Untemeyer Collection, London, 1956, pl. 63 and pp.104-105, where other examples are cited.
