Lot Essay

The figures are based upon Jacque Callot's series of series of 21 engravings, titled Varie figure gobbi di lacopo Callot, published in about 1622. The print which the two figures on the cover are taken from is illustrated by Barbara Beaucamp-Markowsky, Boîtes en Porcelaine des manufactures européennes au 18e siècle, Fribourg, 1985, p. 129, and the two other prints on the same page relate to figures on the front and reverse of this box.
