TWO MEISSEN PORCELAIN GROUPS OF COUNT BRUHL'S TAILOR AND THE TAILOR'S WIFE
The group of the tailor was first modelled by J.F. Eberlein in 1737 (larger and without a base), and remodelled in 1740 when he also created a companion piece of the tailor's wife1.
Other examples of these models are held in The Victoria and Albert Museum, London (C972-1919, her and C982-1919, him) and in the SKD, Dresden (PE195, her). See also the examples of the two models sold from The Merkle Collection, Bonhams, Paris, 17 April 2024, lot 52.

The Tailor -- restoration to front of his hat at brim. Broken through right wrist and restored. His right shoulder with clear lacquer, though it does not appear to be broken through. Right side of reins broken and restored, and to the other side above cloth rolls. Goat horns broken and restored. Chipping and small losses to items in carriers to goat's shoulder harness. One lock of goat hair to front of his body broken and restored. Chipping, losses and restorations to applied leaves and flowers.
The tailor's wife - goat broken through at his right hindleg and restuck. Cracks to underside of base, and chipping to edge of base at underside. Small chipping, losses and restorations to applied leaves and flowers.
Both groups with slight wear to gilding and enamels, occasional small flake, minute chip, firing flaw or surface abrasion throughout.
An XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) test was carried out by The Centre for Archaeological and Forensic Analysis at Cranfield University, confirming that the enamels on these objects are consistent with the published data for enamels on other Meissen porcelain dating from the 18th century.
