The 'Red Dragon' service was one of the first major dinner-services produced for the Saxon Court in 1734, but the service was repeatedly supplemented. By this stage the pattern appears to have been reserved for the Court, though earlier pieces may have been sold to the public. It appears that wares with the red dragon motif were produced as early as 1729 and sold by Rudolph Lemaire in Paris, as Japanese originals. See Julia Weber, Meißener Porzellane mit Dekoren nach ostasiatischen Vorbildern, vol. 2 (2013), pp. 246-254 for a full discussion on this subject.

This plate is decorated with rare variation on the 'Red Dragon' pattern. For plates with similar decoration see Julia Weber, Meißener Porzellane mit Dekoren nach ostasiatischen Vorbildern, vol. 2 (2013), p. 264, pl. 253 and Meissener Porzellan des 18. Jahrhunderts Katalog der Sammlung Hoffmeister, Hamburg, 1998, Vol. I, pp.206-207, pl.115.
