Lot Essay

Both drawings were a gift to Francis Haar from Bernard Leach, when they were both staying at the International House in Tokyo, working on the “Tenno: Symbol & Myth” documentary film in 1964.

Francis Haar was a Hungarian-born portrait photographer who lived in Japan for many years, running a photo studio in Tokyo. His wife Irene opened a restaurant Irene's Hungaria in Ginza, Tokyo which was frequented by intellectuals, celebrities, military personnel, as well as Japanese. In 1960 the family moved to Hawaii where he re-established his photographic studio.
