Lot Essay

William Marshall was born in St Ives and joined the Leach Pottery as its first apprentice at the age of 15, later becoming Bernard Leach's foreman and right-hand man. He supervised the making of the Leach Pottery standard ware, but over time emerged as a major potter in his own right. Like Leach, Marshall was artistically much influenced by the far east including by the potters Kitaoji Rosanjin and Shoji Hamada.
