Lot Essay
In September 1991, environmental land artist Andy Goldsworthy held his first solo exhibition in the United States, at the Arts Club of Chicago. Entitled Sand / Leaves: Michigan Dunes, August 1991. Illinois Woods, September 1991, the exhibition involved one-week stays on a beach in Michigan and also at a wooded area in Illinois. Working day and night in all weather conditions, Goldsworthy created 39 impermanent pieces of sand and leaves, which he documented in colour photographs. The exhibition included the photographs plus several installations made of leaves and sand from the same places. Some installations were for the wall, others for the floor. The present work is one of the original leaf works from the exhibition. Goldsworthy has constructed a beautiful wreath out of Red Oak leaves. The leaves are woven tightly together to form the circular wreath, and are held in position by an intricate interconnecting maze of twigs and stems.

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Please note that the medium for this work is Red Oak leaves in a Perspex box frame and not as listed in the printed catalogue. Not examined out of the frame. The wreath is secured in nine places to the Perspex frame. The leaves appear secure. On close inspection there are a couple of small fragments loose in the frame. There is some minor cracking to the extreme edges of the wreath as to be expected by the medium. On very close inspection there is some minor surface dirt and small handling scuffs to the frame. Subject to the above the work appears to be in very good overall condition.
