Lot Essay

Brazilian-born Ana Maria Pacheco moved to England in 1973 to study at the Slade School of Art, London. Painter, sculptor and printmaker, Pacheco is most celebrated for her polychrome sculptures carved from wood, such as the present work. Her practice primarily explores issues of control and the exercise of power, drawing upon the tensions between the old world of Europe and the new world of her Brazilian birth. The present work is a study for Man and His Sheep (1989), the first of Pacheco's sculptures to be exhibited in a church - at St John's Catholic Church, Bath in 1989; and which is now housed in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery collection.
